Best Animation Studios in Austin (2026)

12 Austin animation studios working in 2026, from Netflix series and rotoscope features to motion design and explainer films

Introduction

Austin has 12 animation studios worth a call in 2026, ranging from a unionised series studio making Netflix shows to small motion design teams that turn out product launches and explainer films for the city's tech companies. The list covers 2D, 3D, rotoscope, stop motion and motion graphics work for brands, broadcast, episodic and games.

The scene has changed shape over the past two years. Warner Bros. Discovery closed Rooster Teeth, the Austin studio behind RWBY and Gen:Lock, in March 2024, laying off around 150 full-time staff. Six months later Powerhouse Animation ratified its first contract with The Animation Guild, making it the first Texas animation studio to join a union. Austin also has a long rotoscope tradition through Richard Linklater's films, and the studio that animated his Netflix feature Apollo 10 1/2 still works here.

Every studio below showed an active Austin base on its own site when checked in October 2026. The list is unranked, since the right studio depends on whether you need an episodic crew, a character animator for a short, or a motion team for a product campaign.

What to look for in an Austin animation studio

Start with the type of work. Austin's studios split between episodic and entertainment crews (Powerhouse, Minnow Mountain, Mighty Coconut), technical and VFX-led 3D studios, and brand studios focused on motion graphics and explainers. A pitch for an animated series needs a very different team from a product launch film, so ask for reels close to your format and running time.

Check the pipeline. Ask which software the studio uses for 2D, 3D and compositing, whether rigging and lighting are done in-house, and how much is handed to freelancers. For rotoscope and performance capture work, ask how the live-action shoot is planned, since the footage drives everything after it.

Agree the review stages early. Most animation moves from script to storyboard, animatic, style frames and final render, and changes get more expensive at each stage. A clear sign-off at the animatic stage saves the most time and money.

Finally, look at how files and feedback are handled. Animation produces large project files, render sequences and many versions of each shot. Studios that keep one current version in a shared place, collect notes against each stage and record what was approved make the last weeks of a project much calmer.

How Fabric helps animation teams

Fabric gives an animation studio one workspace for project files, renders, references and client notes, with AI search across all of it. Scene files and render sequences sit in Fabric's cloud drive, which streams files on demand so they take no local disk space, and shared team folders always show the latest version. There is more on this in your rendering files need a home.

Search works by meaning across scripts, PDFs, images and transcribed recordings, and colour search finds frames and style references by shade. For pre-production, a canvas holds storyboards and moodboards and can embed live Figma, YouTube and Vimeo content.

For client review, clients and directors can leave threaded comments through a shared link without creating an account. Highlights and comments already work on PDFs such as scripts and boards through annotations; timestamped comments and drawing on video and images are coming soon.

For delivery, an animatic, style frames or a finished film can be published as a web page with password protection, and link analytics shows when each named recipient opened it and how long they spent with it.

Password protection and link analytics are included on Pro and Team plans. See plans for teams.
