Best VFX Studios in Chicago (2026)

10 Chicago VFX studios working in advertising and entertainment in 2026, from local boutiques to offices of national post houses

Introduction

Chicago has a compact but experienced visual effects community, built mostly around the advertising agencies that commission national campaigns from the city. The 10 studios below handle CG, compositing and finishing for commercials, with several also working on title sequences, episodic and feature projects.

The market changed shape in February 2025, when Technicolor’s collapse closed The Mill’s Chicago office in Courthouse Place after almost 12 years. Local studio heads told Reel Chicago the city had enough capacity to absorb the work, and named established shops such as Sarofsky, Carbon, Optimus and Cutters alongside newer studios including GoodBit, Almost Gold and Midnight Snack FX. Many former Mill artists went freelance or joined those local teams. The Mill’s US leadership started Arc Creative, which is based in New York and Los Angeles.

Every studio here has an active Chicago base in 2026. Chicago is a smaller VFX market than New York or Los Angeles, so this list is shorter than others in the series, and several entries are full-service post houses with in-house VFX teams. The list runs in no fixed order of merit.

The best VFX studios in Chicago

1. Sarofsky

Independent · Fulton Market · sarofsky.com

Sarofsky is a design-driven studio founded in 2009 by Erin Sarofsky, who remains its executive creative director. It works across motion design, 2D and 3D animation, live action and visual effects, with an in-house VFX and finishing team handling compositing, rotoscoping and tracking. The studio is on West Fulton Street, in a space designed by Olson Kundig.

It is best known for main titles: Netflix’s Beef, Apple TV’s Platonic and HBO Max’s Peacemaker are recent examples, following earlier Marvel sequences for Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange. It also makes commercial and branded work, including animated spots for Penn Medicine.

2. Carbon

Independent · River North · heycarbon.com

Carbon is a VFX, motion graphics and design studio with offices in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Its Chicago team moved into a purpose-built River North studio in 2019, set up so artists in all three cities can work on the same jobs.

Recent work includes Nike’s campaign with the Wu-Tang Clan, projects for Google, Xbox and Vizio, and Super Bowl LVIII spots for Poppi and Discover. Earlier Chicago-led work covered Porsche, Lululemon, Jeep and McDonald’s. It is a useful choice when a campaign needs CG and finishing shared between Chicago and a coastal office.

3. Optimus

Partner-owned · Chicago · optimus.com

Optimus is a production and post company owned by president Tom Duff and a group of partners, with bases in Chicago and New York. It covers editing, colour, visual effects, design, audio mixing and finishing under one roof, and its production arm, ONE at Optimus, represents commercial directors. Brian Hrastar is executive producer and managing director.

Its teams have worked for BMW, Capital One, Southwest Airlines, Walgreens, Apple and Walmart. Recent recognition has come from short films: Paper Flower won Best Short at the Chicago Latino Film Festival in April 2025, and Cake, edited by Hugo Escobar, received three nominations at the Midwest Film Festival in August 2026.

4. Cutters Studios (Flavor)

Independent · Chicago · cuttersstudios.com

Cutters Studios is a Chicago production and post-production group and an AICP member. Its companies include Cutters for editorial, Another Country for sound and Flavor for design, CG and VFX, so a spot can move from cut to effects to mix inside one building.

Flavor’s VFX director Rob Churchill is a Chicago native with two decades of VFX directing behind him, with commercial credits for Capital One, Allstate, Apple, Budweiser, McDonald’s, Samsung and State Farm, and feature effects for IFC Films’ An Acceptable Loss. LBB has covered the group regularly through 2026, including a February profile of Craig Duncan’s approach to leading creative talent.

5. Harbor Chicago

Part of Harbor · River North · harborpicturecompany.com

Harbor opened its Chicago studio at 358 West Ontario Street in October 2023. The company also has studios in New York, Los Angeles, Hollywood, London and Atlanta. The Chicago office offers creative editorial, colour and finishing, sound and design, with a VFX team covering CG, 2D compositing and motion design. Harbor’s site still lists Chicago among its locations in 2026.

At launch the Chicago VFX team was led by creative directors Kyle Cody, Anne Trotman, Andrew Granelli, Alex Candlish and David Soto, under executive creative director Chris Hellman. Harbor’s commercial work includes Tide, Levi’s and Goldfish, and the wider company also works on features and episodic.

6. Utopic

Independent · River North · utopic.net

Utopic is a River North post house founded in 2009 that works on national advertising campaigns. Alongside creative editorial, colour, sound and finishing, it runs a visual effects department covering photoreal CG, character animation, simulations and compositing, and it now offers AI services as well.

Partner and executive producer Heather Mitchell has described Chicago’s VFX talent pool as very strong, pointing to the years when The Mill’s presence pushed local studios to raise their game. Utopic works directly with agencies and production companies, which suits briefs where editorial and effects need to sit with one team.

7. The Colonie

Independent · Chicago · thecolonie.com

The Colonie is a Chicago boutique for creative editorial, visual effects and finishing, positioned as a turnkey resource for national and regional spots and digital content. Its VFX and finishing department is built around Flame artists, with senior talent paired with younger compositors and finishers.

Past work includes a 3D spot for Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. through Leo Burnett and a digital commercial for Google. Partner Bob Ackerman told Reel Chicago in 2025 that The Mill’s closure opened the door for a homegrown VFX company led by artists who live and work in the city.

8. GoodBit

Independent · Chicago · goodbit.tv

GoodBit is one of the newer Chicago studios that local producers named as picking up VFX work after The Mill closed. It covers concept development, live action, editorial, design and animation, VFX and compositing, finishing, and virtual and real-time production.

Clients shown on its site include the Raiders, Sol de Janeiro, HPE, Earpeace and Hershey’s. The mix of live action and real-time work makes it worth a look for campaigns that need both a shoot and CG extensions.

9. Midnight Snack FX

Independent · Chicago · msfx.tv

Midnight Snack FX is a Chicago post studio co-founded by Scott North and Jay Noir, with Caitlin Cronin as executive producer. Its work spans animation, motion graphics, editing, broadcast packages and web content.

It was among the newer studios cited in 2025 as taking on effects and animation work in the city. It suits smaller-scale motion and compositing jobs and broadcast graphics, where a nimble team is more useful than a large pipeline.

10. Almost Gold

Independent · West Town · almostgold.com

Almost Gold is a motion, design and colour studio on West Hubbard Street. It sits closer to the design end of the VFX spectrum, producing animated and composited content for brands and agencies.

Chicago producers named it in 2025 among the emerging studios absorbing work that once went to The Mill. Ask to see recent CG and compositing reels alongside its design work, since its public site focuses on motion and colour.

What to look for in a Chicago VFX studio

Start with how the studio is set up. Many Chicago VFX teams sit inside full-service post houses such as Utopic, Optimus and Cutters, where editorial, colour, effects and sound share one building. That suits a spot that needs to move quickly from cut to finish. Specialist studios like Sarofsky and Carbon are a better fit when design or heavy CG is the centre of the brief.

Check the scale of the CG team against the job. Chicago studios are mostly boutique sized, and large CG builds or long episodic runs may be shared with freelancers or with a sister office in New York or Los Angeles. Ask who supervises the shots, where the artists are based, and how much of the work stays in house.

Ask about the shoot. A VFX supervisor on set saves time and money in post, particularly for product shots, set extensions and clean plates. Several studios here also produce live action, which can make it easier to plan effects from the first board.

Look at how review works day to day. Effects work runs through many versions, from early blocking to final comp, and agency teams need to see the latest one without hunting through email. A studio with a clear review process, sensible file naming and a single place for approved shots will save rounds and avoid late surprises.

How Fabric helps VFX teams

Fabric gives a VFX studio one workspace for its files, client feedback and production knowledge, with AI search across all of it. Render outputs, plates, references and project documents can sit together, which is the approach set out in your rendering files need a home.

Heavy files live in Fabric’s cloud drive, which streams files on demand so they take no local disk space. Artists can open large renders and video without waiting for a full download, and shared team folders always hold the latest version. Search works by meaning across documents, images and transcribed recordings, and colour search finds frames and references by shade. Similar search surfaces images with comparable composition, colour and subject, which helps when matching a look from an earlier job.

For agency review, any file or folder can be published as a web page and shared with password protection. Link analytics shows when each named recipient opened a link and how long they spent with it. Clients can leave threaded comments through a shared link without signing up. Highlights and comments work on PDFs and documents through annotations, and timestamped comments and drawing on video and images are coming soon. There is more on the wider workflow in Fabric’s review and approval guide.

Supervisors and producers can keep call notes in the same place. AI meeting notes record a review call without a bot joining and merge the notes with the transcript, so client feedback on each shot can be found later.

Password protection and link analytics are included on Pro and Team plans. See plans for teams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best VFX studio in Chicago?

It depends on the job. Sarofsky is the strongest choice for design-led work and title sequences, Carbon for CG shared across Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and full-service houses such as Utopic, Optimus and Cutters for spots that need editorial and effects under one roof.

Is The Mill still in Chicago?

No. Technicolor closed The Mill’s US offices, including Chicago, in February 2025. Its US leadership launched Arc Creative with Dream Machine FX, based in New York and Los Angeles, and many Chicago artists moved to local studios or freelance work.

Do Chicago VFX studios work on film and TV?

Some do. Sarofsky makes main titles for series such as Beef and Peacemaker, Harbor works across features and episodic, and Flavor’s VFX director has feature credits. Most Chicago VFX capacity still goes to advertising.

Should I use a VFX specialist or a full-service post house?

A full-service post house keeps editorial, colour, effects and sound in one place, which shortens hand-offs on a typical spot. A specialist suits work where CG or design leads the idea. For broader options see the best post-production companies in Chicago.

How far ahead should I book a Chicago VFX studio?

For a standard spot, bring the studio in before the shoot so a supervisor can plan plates and on-set data. Larger CG builds need more lead time, since Chicago teams are boutique sized and may need to add freelancers.
